A buddy of mine told me the other day that baiting deer in Ohio was legal. If so, how many of you have had success hunting over bait?? Here in WV, baiting seems to attract bears more than anything else. Of course the deer come in every now and again for a quick bite, but they don't usually stick around too long. Also, we don't have alot of corn fields close to where we hunt.... so I think the mature deer are wise to the fact that "the corn is not supposed to be there".... and usually stay out of the corn pile during daylight hours.
In many parts of Ohio, I'm sure baiting is prolly pointless because of the huge corn and soybean fields. Just wandering if anybody in OH hunts over bait....or if that's just something us Hillbillies do. lol

I've never hunted over bait. I have placed my tree stand near food plots and an apple orchord. I guess in a sense those are almost bait but you never know how'll they'll come in. There are just so many options. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe deer can take over 120 different plants and turn them into energy. Thats why the White-tail is so adapt and its range covers most of North America.

I don't , but a freind hunts over a feeder .
It spits out shelled corn just after sun rise and 1 hr before sun set .

Not sure if the bigest buck uses the feed before sun set .
But he has taken at least 1 deer over the feed for as long as I have known him ( 20+ years )

He used to use just shelled corn dumped on the ground .

I know others that use pumpkins , beats , suger beats , apples and carrots .

Most guys just make a pile .

I was told , the food pile needs to be there for severl weeks before the deer realy use it a lot .

to much time on my hands

like john pointed out, if its a consistant food source ("bait" or not) it can be very successful

The friends I have and myself have put out several feeders each year for the past five years we feed the deer but very seldon have shot one near the feeder. There are alot of does and yearlings that come in but seldom any bucks. To fill the freezer it works ok but no wall hangers

The truth and only the truth-AS ONLY I CAN SEE IT
